What is well?

First off, I would like to apologize to everyone for not updating my blog sooner. I have been lazy as of late! My question today that I pose to all of you is what is well?

Some of us take our medicine and others do not. Does one make us more well then the other? I take my medicine as prescribe and I still get schizophrenic episode. However, if I didn’t take my meds. I would probably be homeless and wondering the streets!

I mean does going to therapy make us well or not? Sometimes when we in therapy stuff stays with us because our time is up and we can’t work through the rest. I realize a lot of people practice “door knob” therapy, where we don’t tell the therapist what’s really serious until fifteen minutes before time is up. However, does crying and releasing all this sad emotion good? I have often wondered if a hundred years from now if they would think that is just inhuman. However, hashing through serious stuff in until it becomes a scare and not a wound helps a lot. I know I said it before group therapy helps me tremendously. Without the support of my fellow peers in the rooms, I don’t know where I would be.

Does living a normal life make us well? For example we could go to work. But isn’t true that sometimes it brings more stress then it is worth? However, don’t we want to be productive members of society? I think that is good for the soul. Although, I don’t hold a job, I volunteer.

I think maybe we have to choose the lesser of two evils. What is well anyway? I think it’s funny if a poor person is mentally ill, she is called crazy. However, if a rich person is mentally ill, she is called eccentric. In this world we have to be ourselves. The most important thing is to be true to ourselves. And if that means sometimes we seem a little off to people, well so be it! However, keep taking those meds, going to therapy, and being productive members of society.

  1. Good post, Amanda. I've often thought about these things myself.

  2. "Choosing the lesser of two evils."

For me, that means major depression and crippling panic attacks OR meds that make me tired, dopey, and addicted.

I take the meds; they'll never make me well, but at least I can function every day.

    A good post, Amanda.

  3. Thanks guys! It's good to know that I am not alone. Charlie, my meds. make me tired too. How long have you been on meds? I been on them for 10 years and I can tell you slowly your body gets used to it's effects so your not as sleepy. Thanks Drifter, like I said I feel like I am not alone. And a shout out to Amber. Thanks for looking at my blog!

  4. You are definitely not alone in these thoughts Amanda, these are all great points to ponder and things I often wonder. Especially about madness and wealth, and like you say, it's considered almost groovy or trendy to be a little nutty when you are famous or rich! But definitely NOT cool to be nutty and poor. Good to have a post from you - thanks for sharing x

  5. you post more often then I do. I have become addicted to twitter. I think you make valid points about rich and crazy vs poor and crazy... my mom can tell you a lot about how sad it is for those who are mentally ill and poor in my area.

  6. First time to post but I read your blog and have you in my favorites. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. My son is "newly" dealing with SZ and has had bad luck with the meds but doing surprisingly well right now without. It keeps us on alert but its ok for now. Loved your thoughts on the rich versus the poor... think I will share that one at our next support group! It's good to connect with you! Your words help us know we are here for each other. Thanks! Janet (NAMI Mom in TN)

  7. Hi Amanda,

Of course I remember you. How could I forget such a dear, sweet child? I am pleased you and M have re-connected. We often wondered where you went. I don't know that it's so much about normal. Some of the most lucid people I know have had schizophrenia. I think it's about happy. We all have that goal, and just about everyone thinks it's easier for everyone else.

  8. Sorry guys for not responding earlier. Thanks everyone for liking the rich vs. poor. I think that is often true.

Maddie - thanks for visiting my blog

Janet - I will pray for your son and I hope you can use what I say in your support grop. I try to spark conversation with my blog.

o - mom - thank you for your beautiful words. You touched my heart. I am glad I reconnected with Maddie, your daughter! When I became ill with my mental illness, I lost a lot of friends. Some because they weren't comfortable (which Maddie doesn't fit into), but others (like Maddie) I was to scared to tell.

    Thanks everyone,
    Amanda
